Jeter has the right idea

For Jeter, nothing less than excellence will do | yankees.com: News:

"Jeter savored the milestone and the second-half resurgence that accompanied it, but the Yankees' captain is making this much clear: Last year is over, and it's time to deal with 2012.

"That day was fun, but we had a game the next day," Jeter said. "I enjoyed it for the moment, but it's over and done with. You can watch highlights only so much before you have to move on. I guess that's just the way I was built.""

I watched the incredible 2004 Yanks-Red Sox game in which Derek cannon-balled himself into the stands to save the game which the Yanks won in extra innings. Derek knows as we all do that ultimately everything is past and forgotten. All of our language about classic this and one and only that is hyperobole. It is a good attitude to have. It fits in under the foundational ontological value which is non-idolatry - call it iconoclasm, call it not suffering fools gladly, call it realism. The game is on right now. Fixate on the past at your peril. Fixate on the future ... in your dreams.

What is She, A Freak?

Mitt Romney, Michigan and a Couple of Cadillacs - NYTimes.com: "He did it again on Friday. At the end of a speech about his economic plan before the Detroit Economic Club, when it felt as though he was just winging it, he said: “I love this country. I actually love this state. This feels good being back in Michigan. Um, you know the trees are the right height. The, uh, the streets are just right. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles. I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pickup truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually.”"

Are Younger Women Lost To Obama?

This is a question
Have younger women not born in the pre-Rove v. Wade era
Learned how horrendous things were?
Will they have to suffer a Republican avalanche of interference with their bodies
To see they must defeat them before they can invade
If the answer is yes they know
They will vote to bring down the invaders
If they are oblivious to a past they never knew
The lie-spinners of the GOP will have a field day
Obfuscating their way into the bedrooms of the nation

Does Everybody Have To Be Monetized?

From the buzz about needing to move from old forms of education to instruction in being entrepreneurs, you would think so. I can see a zillion community colleges revving up to teach us all to use social networks to make our fortune. I have always thought the greater part of what we call work is a charade. An excuse to earn. A veil of hypocrisy for the most part. The exemption in the past has always been for those who worked by the sweat of their brow. Or who applied massive skills to achieve something of value. But since all the rest need to live, the charade persists. I am still not sure if this is not the case. But I do know that even if we do not need to make a living, it makes sense to act as if we do. Thus I have monetized myself. Note to your right the word Store! If a million of you patronize it I will be written up as an exemplar of monetization.

It will come down to the Supreme Court

Focus on Social Issues Could Shape Battle for Women - NYTimes.com: "Rick Santorum creates a stir by speaking out against prenatal testing. Virginia’s governor and legislature get caught up in an emotional debate over requiring women seeking abortions to undergo an ultrasound. President Obama, under pressure, recalibrates his position on health-insurance coverage of contraception for employers with religious affiliations."

President Obama will win because women do not wish to be continually dissed and threatened by men who profess to be Republican but are actually the prime apostles of hyper-government interference in the most intimate areas of all. Women will favor the President by more than they did in 2008. And the biggest argument will be that there may be by the grace of the deity a chance to modify the unseemly "conservatism" of the Court. Were they truly conservative we would have nothing to worry about. Plainly the current majority wants to allow men to interfere in all ways personal and political.

One would like to believe this

U.S. Agencies See No Move by Iran to Build a Bomb - NYTimes.com: "WASHINGTON — Even as the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said in a new report Friday that Iran had accelerated its uranium enrichment program, American intelligence analysts continue to believe that there is no hard evidence that Iran has decided to build a nuclear bomb."

Clearly this is a move to calm the waters. It will be deemed false by hawks. But it may well reflect an intelligence much improved under our President.
