Most of what Dylan paints is straightforward.
Bob Dylan’s Fugitive Art by Richard Prince | NYRblog | The New York Review of Books: "Most of what Dylan paints is straightforward. There’s nothing really to be interpreted or guessed at, and the rendering seems to say, “I don’t want excitement, and I don’t want to be exciting.” If I were to describe the painting in musical terms, I would say they’re more acoustic than electric."

Principal goes ballistic in Alabama
Student says he was assaulted for wearing a gay rights T-shirt: "MADISONVILLE (WATE) – A student says he was assaulted by his principal for wearing a T-shirt supporting a Gay Straight Alliance club at his school.
Students at Sequoyah High School in Madisonville began pushing for the club in August, but said they were facing obstacles from school administrators."
This state needs psychoanalysis. Last time I was there a minister got killed. That was a week after demonstrators were clubbed on a Selma bridge. You do not wish that a state undergo misfortune. But you could fault the current GOP-drenched political climate.

Sendak has lived here for 40 years – until recently with his partner Eugene, who died in 2007; and now alone with his dog, Herman (after Melville), a large alsatian who barges to the door to greet us. "He's German," says Sendak, getting up from the table where he is doing a jigsaw puzzle of a monster from his most famous book, Where the Wild Things Are. This conception of the present in general
Peirce's Arisbe: Peirce's ON A NEW LIST OF CATEGORIES (frame):
This conception of the present in general, or IT in general, is rendered in philosophical language by the word "substance" in one of its meanings. Before any comparison or discrimination can be made between what is present, what is present must have been recognized as such, as it, and subsequently the metaphysical parts which are recognized by abstraction are attributed to this it, but the it cannot itself be made a predicate. This it is thus neither predicated of a subject, nor in a subject, and accordingly is identical with the conception of substance.

In 1956, on the Christmas Day when he was thirty-four, someone tossed six sticks of dynamite through his window. A few months later, he was one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, along with Martin Luther King, Jr. That same year, the Times’s obituary notes, “Klansmen attacked him with bicycle chains and brass knuckles.”"

Otherwise, the President looks like a hopeless guy out there trying to sell something that is already doomed. He needs to surround himself with the people he cites as injured,. Laid off teachers. Laid off workers. Kids being short-changed. This is show time. The time for reasoning with the unreasonable was over long ago.

Rising Grace - The Collapse of Religion in America
American Grace and public sociology « The Immanent Frame: "One main finding is that, as compared to thirty years ago (their baseline of comparison), religion and politics have tended to line up more consistently than they had previously, such that people who are more religious tend to be more conservative politically, whereas people who are less religious tend to be more liberal. One of the chief reasons is that younger people have been put off by the association of religion with conservative politics since the time of the Moral Majority. This was itself, according to Putnam and Campbell, a response to the upheavals of the 1960s, and especially to its challenges to gender and sexual norms. Religious-political polarization has been the consequence."

Solid simplicity is not being your usual rational explanatory self, Sir.
Solid simplicity is: These guys have been wanting to get rid of me for three years. So they can protect privilege from the White House.

Divine justice unlike human justice will not, in the end, be mocked
Per Caritatem: "For Douglass to gloss over this all-too-recent contemptible American history because he is no longer in chains would be to turn a deaf ear to the “mournful wail of millions” and to once again allow the white, hegemonic culture to write the black story. Moreover, Douglass reminds his audience—who, after all, function as analogues to the captors of God’s people of old—that God’s heart bleeds for the weak, the humble, the downtrodden. Though a merciful and forgiving God, divine justice unlike human justice will not, in the end, be mocked."
While the above has merit, I offer a correction. In the end, justice will not be mocked because human beings will finally have chosen the ontological values of tolerance, helpfulness, democracy and non-idolatry in sufficient numbers to create a world where justice is ever more common.

The Problem is Not How Many Jobs Obama Has Created
ProPublica:
I suppose the back and forth binary people want to argue about the exact number of jobs created or not created by who. That is silly. The real issue is that work in an automation culture needs redefinition, all the way from the overpaid CEO to the unemployed person who has skills nobody wants. Work should be seen as something useful regardless of anyone's willingness to pay for it. We pay out money in this economy in a most uneven manner and everything has a value that is determined by the knockoff scale, You can buy a T short for one or $1000 bucks. Values that we should pay for are non-idolatry, helpfulness, democracy and tolerance. Everyone should have shopping credits which can only be used to buy things. The only qualification is you do something useful that relates to the values I've mentioned. This can be volunteer or not. It can be content creation that is paid for or not. We need to see that in the future we will not have the same sort of work that we have had for the past century. We need to think about it. Anything else is binary nonsense and wasting time.

David Korten: Why I'm in Solidarity with #OccupyWallStreet: "Contrary to the Wall Street propaganda, Wall Street is a job killer, not a job creator. Wall Street banks and corporations have no interest in creating jobs, educating American children, or assuring that Americans have health care and retirement security. They appeal for ever more tax breaks and regulatory relief only to have yet more money to use as they used their taxpayer provided bailout: to increase executive bonuses, pay dividends, buy other companies, buy back their own stock to increase the value of their stock options, buy political favor, create new financial bubbles, and outsource yet more jobs."
